From any computer in Green Bank (other than Solaris machines) just type astrid to start the program. It takes astrid between 1-6 seconds to launch from the command line, depending upon whether you are using a Windows or a Linux machine. The first thing you will see is the astrid "splash screen". It looks like this:

How to start Astrid

Astrid Modes

There are three different modes in astrid. The first mode is "offline". In offline mode you can edit and syntactically validate your scheduling blocks. You can also use the data display part of astrid to look at previously obtained data.

The second mode is "monitor." In this mode you can actively watch what is currently happening in astrid for the current GBT observations. However, you will not be allowed to submit any scheduling blocks are to affect the observing in any manner.

The final mode is "online." In this mode you can run scheduling blocks and you are in full control of the GBT observations.

You will need to know which mode you want to use before starting astrid.

At this point you need to deside what mode in which you would like to run astrid. To select the offline mode just use the radio button to select the "Work offline" option in the "pop-up" window. To select the monitor mode just use the radio button to select the "Work online, but only monitor observations" option in the "pop-up" window. To select the online mode just use the radio button to select the "Work online with control of the telescope" option in the "pop-up" window. Once you have selected the mode in which you want to start astrid you should click on the "OK" button to bring up astrid in the desired mode. You will then see a screen that looks something like:

Once you see this screen you have successfully started astrid.

Astrid will now ask you what mode you would like to operate in. This will be done via a "pop-up" window that looks like:
