Example M81/M82 galaxy group map produced from a GBT observation
GBT Observations
Glen Langston and Kate Rubin observed M81/M82 group of galaxies with the GBT, during the summer of 2003.
The images covered a large angular range, from RA range 6h30m to 10h45m, and declination range 64d to 74d.
Two smaller maps were produced for a 2d x 2d region centered on M81. In the example below, we
show the data reduction process for one map in this 2d x 2d region.
These observations were intended to fill a gap in GBT maintenance time, during a period of
GBT track repair. The GBT project Id is 03B_034.
The observations were carried out over 5 days. The observing logs are tabulated below:

GBTIDL
The data were averaged, calibrated, flagged by Katie Chynoweth and Glen Langston in summer 2007.
The calibration process used some specialized IDL scripts, included below:
After calibration the data were flagged and re-formated for AIPS using idlToSdfits.
AIPS
Each of the individually calibrated, flagged and baseline subtracted data sets were input to AIPS.
Within AIPS, the data were examined using the following AIPS tasks.
- UVLOD
- PRTSD
- DBCON
- SDIMG
- TVLOD
In this example, we image 201 channels in the velocity range
RECUBE.001
The foreground emission from our galaxy (and associated high velocity clouds) contaminate
the observation of M81/M82. We chose to interpolate across regions containing Galactic emission,
which is found in the velocity range -85 to 25 km/sec.
The linux script archiveFind searches a data base, maintained by Glen Langston, that has a ASCII summary of every GBT observation. The archiveFind script does a string search on all of the data base entries. Up to three arguments may be given to archiveFind (ie archiveFind M81 Map Langston would find all the m81 mapping observations by Langston).
