TELESCOPE OPERATIONS

GBT LIGHTING SYSTEMS

Warning

Notify the FAA anytime the GBT aircraft warning lights become inoperative at night.

General

The GBT is equipt with aircraft warning lights , rotating warning lights at the azimuth and elevation drives, and stairway/catwalk lights . This procedure covers use of these systems and steps to take should a failure occur.

Aircraft Warning Lights

STEP ACTION
NOTE The aircraft warning lights should be checked at least once each evening. More often as conditions warrent.
1 Check the aircraft warning lights from the GBT control room. Proceed to the next steps only if they are out.
2 Call FAA Elkins Flight Service at 1-800-426-7070 and inform them of the outage. Include the following GBT coordinates: Latitude=38Deg 25Min 59.42Sec; Longitude=079Deg 50Min 23.20Sec; AGL=495ft; MSL=3141ft.
3 Log the outage in OpsLog and notify maintenance during normal business hours.
4 Call FAA Elkins Flight Service back when the lights are working again.

Azimuth - Elevation Drive Warning Lights

The warning lights mounted on each azimuth truck and set of elevation drives come on only when the drive are activated. They will normally be inspected by maintenance personnel during routine maintenance days and/or walkthrough checks. Should they be found inoperative at any other time, log the outage in OpsLog and notify maintenance during normal business hours.

Stairwell - Catwalk Lights

STEP ACTION
NOTE 1 These lights should be turned on anytime the telescope is accessed during darkness or as directed.
NOTE 2 Log any outages in OpsLog and report the outage to maintenance during normal business hours.
NOTE 3 Lighting control panels are placed at various locations along the catwalks and stairwell access points. The zones (1, 2, and 3) on the control panels correspond to the lights as follows: Zone 1 = Allidade level; Zone 2 = Lower stairway and catwalks to elevation bearing level; Zone 3 = upper feedarm and catwalks.
1 To turn the lights ON, go a to lighting system control panel and press the button(s) corresponding to the zones you want activated.
2 To turn the lights off, simply press the OFF button(s).
