General

The following are basic procedures used to prepare for pulsar observations using the BCPM.

Info

Additional specific settings will be required depending on the observers desires. The following guide shows the basic tasks that may be required:

The character " ^ " is used below to emphasize spaces between dialog elements.

Starting Applications

BCPM Screens

STEP

ACTION
1 From an xterm window:
  • ssh ^ sadira  (logs in secure to this workstation. You can login to a different workstation if directed)
  • ssh ^ -l ^ bcpm2 ^ bcpm2  (logs in to BCPM and brings up task selection menu)
  • From the task selection menu, select the u option (user interface)
  • When prompted for a login name, press enter (default option)

The following windows will launch:

  • Status Display
  • Command Line Interface
  • Graphical User Interface
  • Level Monitor

BCPM Command Line Interface Window Commands

COMMAND

ACTION
setpower Runs a script on the BCPM to set the power levels in the channels.
timing Used to set up the BCPM in timing mode and start acquiring data.
monitor Sets up the BCPM (for search and voltage sampling modes) and acquires data without saving it to disk or tape.
takedata Used in search and voltage sampling modes to commence taking a stretch of search data to disk or tape.
abort Stops the BCPM without saving the last data sample to disk or tape.
stop Stops the BCPM and saves the last data sample to disk or tape.

GO

Info

GO does not tolerate mutiple iterations of itselfe. Do NOT start GO unless instructed to do so by the observer.

STEP

ACTION
1 To initiate GO with all devices enter:    GO  (Launches GO with the main menu appearing)
2 To initiate GO with specific devices deselected enter:    GO ^ T

The GO device menu will appear. Deselect those devices not required.

NOTE If GO hangs up while initiating the antenna, start it using this command instead:    GO ^ F ^ 10

Launch CLEO Device Screens

STEP

ACTION
1 From the Cleo Launch menu, launch the following application:
  • Applicable Receiver
  • LO
  • IF Rack
  • Converter Rack

Launch additional applications if needed or required for the specific observing run.

BCPM GO Panel

Info

As of 18JAN05 most all setups are done using the config tool. Do not run this unless instructed to by the observer.

STEP

ACTION
1 From an xterm window:
  • PSRGUI (launches the BCPM GO Panel)

Running The Setup Script

Info

As of 18JAN05 most all setups are done using the config tool. Do not run this unless instructed to by the observer. Config scripts are no longer supported and may be partially non-functional.

STEP

ACTION
1 From an xterm window:
  • cd ^ include (changes to the include directory)
  • glish ^ -l ^ xxxx.g (substitute the "xxxx" with the applicable script name)
  • Select the option number corresponding to the desired receiver.
  • Select the BCPM (option 1)
  • Enter r (run option)

The BCPM should be ready now.

Checking IF Power

STEP

ACTION
1 Cleo receiver:
  • Check LO power:  5v is optimal
  • Check noise source:  Firing
2 Cleo LO
  • Confirm:  LO set for correct signal path to receiver
  • Confirm:  Correct rest frequency
3 Cleo IF Rack:
  • Confirm:  Correct signal path setup for receiver
  • Balance:   IR rack
  • Check RF power:  1v is optimal
4 Cleo Converter Rack:
  • Confirm:  Routing to correct Converter Module (Rack A CM4 & 8)
  • Confirm:  Correct LO2 frequency
  • Check RF power:  Values normally well below 1v
