    TELESCOPE OPERATIONS

    SPECTRAL PROCESSOR RECOVERY PROCEDURES

    General

The following procedures are used to restart the Spectral Processor should it become hung in a particular state. Use the basic restart procedure first and the expanded procedure only if the basic procedure fails to correct the problem or if problems appear associated with gemini.

    Info

Aborting via the Scan Coordinator should be attempted first as this will occasionally correct a hung state problem.

The expanded restart procedure should be used if the basic restart procedure fails to solve the problem, or if a persistent problem is noted. This procedure requires the root access password. Contact computing division personnel for assistance as needed.

The character " ^ " is used below to emphasize spaces between dialog elements.

    Basic Restart Procedure

    STEP

    ACTION
    1 From an xterm window:
    • su ^ monctrl (logs into monitor control. Follow with current password)
    • ssh ^ gemini (secure logs into gemini. Follow with gbtops password)
    • source ^ /home/gbt/gbt.bash (ensures correct sourcing)
    • TaskMaster ^ gemini ^ systemstop (stops processes)
    • TaskMaster ^ gemini ^ status (checks status of processes to ensure they are stopped)
NOTE The TaskMaster Cleo application may be used to complete the system stop actions as well.
2 Go to the Spectral Processor, right cabinet rack, and press the red reset button on the bottom single board (the red system fail light will come on (reboot in progress). Wait for this light to go out and the other lights to flash green before proceeding)
3 From an xterm window log into gemini as monctrl (complete step 1, first 3 tasks) then:
    • TaskMaster ^ gemini ^ systemstart ^ /home/gbt.etc/config/geminiProc.conf

This will restart and configure the Spectral Processor

4 Monitor the message window and Spectral Processor window to ensure faults clear.
5 If deemed necessary, run the Memory Test option located under the Advanced tab of the Spectral Processor window. Repeat the restart procedure if problems are noted. Call computing division personnel for assistance if necessary.
NOTE Spectral Processor observing settings are wiped out during a reboot. They will need to be restored before resuming any observations.

    Expanded Restart Procedure

    STEP

NOTE Step 2 may require computer division personnel assistance if you don't have access to gemini's root password.
2 From the same xterm window above:
    • su ^ root (logs into gemini with super user privileges. Follow with password)
    • sync (insures file system integrity before the system is shutdown)
    • reboot (reboots the workstation. Proceed when reboot is complete)
3 Go to the Spectral Processor, right cabinet rack, and press the red reset button on the bottom singleboard (the red system fail light will come on (reboot in progress). Wait for this light to go out and the other lights to flash green before proceeding)
    4 From an xterm window:
    • su ^ monctrl (logs into monitor control. Follow with current password)
    • ssh ^ gemini (secure logs into gemini. Follow with gbtops password)
    • source ^ /home/gbt/gbt.bash (ensures correct sourcing)
    • TaskMaster ^ gemini ^ systemstart ^ /home/gbt.etc/config/geminiProc.conf

This will restart and configure the Spectral Processor

5 Monitor the message window and Spectral Processor window to ensure fault clear.
6 If deemed necessary, run the Memory Test option located under the Advanced tab of the Spectral Processor window. Repeat the basic restart procedure again if problems are noted. Additional computing division personnel assistance will be required for persistent problems.
NOTE Spectral Processor observing settings are wiped out during a reboot. They will need to be restored before resuming any observations.
