GBT Friend Assignments
Accepted proposals which are scheduled will be assigned a "Friend" who is available for consultation. The Friend will be also present and help train first time observers.

Beginning with April 2004, assignment of GBT Friends will be blocked into four periods during any particular week. The only exceptions to this will include

  • Equipment specialties
  • Projects which include GB staff (that staff member will be assigned as Friend)

The week will formally start Saturday at 06:00am and end the following Saturday at 06:00am. The four periods or blocks are nomially defined as

  • Weekend Days o Saturday through Monday inclusive o 06:00 - 18:00 Eastern Time
  • Weekend Nights o Saturday through Monday inclusive o 18:00 - 06:00 Eastern Time
  • Weekday Days o Tuesday through Friday inclusive o 06:00 - 18:00 Eastern Time
  • Weekday Nights o Tuesday through Friday inclusive o 18:00 - 06:00 Eastern Time

    Welcome to the proposal checkout center. The purpose of this web site is to handle the management of verifying that all GBT proposals can be observed using the current state of the GBT hardware and software. Every approved GBT proposal is classified into one of the following five categories. Proposals that are not part of this process include VLBI and most Rapid Response Science requests (Exploratory Time and Target of Oportunity).

    • Active Checkout The proposal is actively under investigation for feasibility of observations. In cases where some or all of the proposed observations are feasible, the proposal will be moved to the "schedule" queue. If no part of the proposal is currently feasible (for example, they require a mode which is not yet available) then the proposal will be placed in the "on hold" queue. Active Checkout for GB scientific staff (password required).

    • Schedule At least some part of the proposal is capable of being scheduled. Proposals remain in this category until either they are complete, or are returned to the "active checkout" queue (for those parts of the proposal which were not originally feasible. Schedule for GB scientific staff (password required).

    • On Hold This category is for proposals which have been checked for feasibilty, and cannot currently be scheduled. These will be reviewed periodically, and returned to the "active checkout" queue to be reassessed when the required capabilities are made available.
