Green Bank RFI Management Cycle 3 Progress Report (Apr 1 - May 15, 2007)
1. Direct Observer Support:
- Working to achieve voluntary cooperation from a transmitter outside the NRQZ on 856.2875, 856.3625, 857.2875, and 858.2875 MHz.
- Investigated interference report at 18.57 GHz.
- Worked with Rick Fisher to look at low-level, narrowband, L band interference suspected of coming from receiver room equipment.
- Investigated numerous reports of broadband and narrowband interference in the week prior to the start of the track work; the broadband could have been powerline, wleding, or both. Requested some metrics of welding RFI from Scott Ransom, who will be observing during the track work.

3. WVRAZ:
- Have identified an appropriate limit comparison method and developed an evaluation method for equipment in the WVRAZ.
- Continued monitoring for power line and cable TV RFI.
- Have monitored Frontier's progress in the critical, line-of-sight installations in this area. They have not yet replaced a single wireless modem. Have re-initiated contact with the Frontier lawyer.
- Have spoken with the Snowshoe communications manager RE the WVRAZ limits and WIFI installations at Soaring Eagle Lodge at Snowshoe. Scheduled to meet with them.
4. On-Site RFI Mitigation (Zones 1-2):
- Anechoic Chamber testing:
- 4/9/07 initial testing of Compressor Control Unit for 140' telescope
- 4/11/07 Proximity Card Reader
- 4/16/07 Nike Ipod acessory 2.4 GHz transmitter
- 5/14/07 Antenna Pattern Measurement system for the PAPER project.
- Chamber converted for feed testing and returned to RFI testing setup
- Spoke with business management about removing telephone patch boxes from rack and with computer division about disconnecting and reconnecting fiber optic cables in rack. The rack in the auditorium will be worked on after the Summer tour season 07.
- Provided initial input RE RFI aspect of Proposed GBT Fire Suppression system.
5. RFI Policy, Instrumentation, Reporting Mechanism, etc:
- GBT Monitoring Station
- Gimbal, antennas and cabling installed. Need to hook up fiber lines and run operational checks.
- Working collaboratively with Amy to develop web-based forms for data entry for the RFI Database. Also devised a set of criteria so we can give Danielle a set of realistic fake data to work with in designing her IDL tool.
- RFI Monitoring Station at 40'
- RFI Truck
- Provided RFI presentation at GBT tour guide orientation meetings. (actually got to use it at one of the 2 meetings)
- Corresponded with a student participant in the Summer EPO programs about the site policy.
6. Outreach:
- Paulette preparing NSMA Presentation; group input.
- Anechoic Chamber tours for the WVU visit
7. Other:
- Performed an RFI survey in Charlottesville of the fully populated ALMA correlator.
