At PENN

  • Final optics fabrication
  • Run MUX cold in dewar, become familiar with operation
    • ... with detectors.
    • address any issues found in the process (eg magnetic fields in the dewar that render squids inoperable)
  • Test and characterize system with detectors (optical efficiency, noise, loading, etc)
  • in-Lab demonstration of basic functionality before GBT run

At GSFC

  • Characterize the test bolometer arrays
  • Fabricate final bolometer arrays
  • complete & distribute IRC v6
  • get MkIII? MUXing fully working, and the data into IRC

At NIST

  • 2 day MUX operation training session (sometime in first 2 weeks of Oct)

At GB

  • grail infrastructure improvements
  • IRC java/soap GBT IX work
  • NIST visit
  • 2x 1 week Penn Lab visits in Jan/Feb??
  • manufacture mounting hardware and RFI box
  • test assemble/fit mounting hardware and RFI box, send on to Penn
  • manufacture lenses
  • PTCS team consulting support for pointing & focus in Feb/Mar 2005
    • PAR team in turn would support OOF mapping on a consulting basis...

NOTE: We have planned a big effort starting May 2005 to port the NASA software functionality over to GBT M&C.

5. Milestones

  • Penn / GSFC
    • Take delivery of final cryostat (early Dec03 -- done)
    • Cooldown of final cryostat (25mar04 --> done 05may04 -- & 20mK colder than test cryostat and old fridge!)
    • Final MUX operational in lab with dummy bolometers (01feb04 --> 01may04 --> early Jun? --> Fall 2005)
      • nb: preliminary MUX has been operated in black-box mode at Penn, still awaiting firmware upgrades, cold operation, etc
      • 06may04: waiting on Tekdata cables for cold operation; these are in progress, expected in ~4 weeks from now.
    • Finish Optics construction (30apr04 --> Dec 2005)
    • Working detectors delivered to Penn (17may04 --> Fall 2005??)
    • Integrate detectors to final cryostat (14jun04 --> Dec 2005??)
    • Construction complete/begin testing final instrument (06sep04 --> Mar 2005?)
    • Delivery to GB (Sep 04 --> Feb 2005?)
  • GB
    • Tests of new scan modes/observing procedures (30dec03 --> done)
    • collaboration meetings (GSFC nov 03; GSFC & Princeton feb04; done)
    • Better Simulated Datasets (15jan04 --> done apr04 [mosaicking, skydips, other scan patterns, improved atmosphere model] , some fixed still needed done and analyzed...)
    • specify calibration strategy (june/july 04 --> sometime before the engineering run??)
    • DAQ Interface finalized and documented (early may 04 --> late may 04)-- includes OS issues, timestamping-- GSFC working on this now.
    • Bill Cotton's package analyzes simulated datasets (early Jul 04-- done but still iterating on simulation improvements [may04])
      • We still have issues to sort out in OBIT but no time to work on this in the near term. Maybe just wait until real data.
    • project status review meeting in Philly, with extended working visit (jun04 done)
    • RFI Enclosure design finished (Q1 04 --> august04 --> Sep 2004)
    • RFI Enclosure and mounting hardware manufactured, fit checked, and delivered to Penn (end Dec 2004)
    • Manufacture final lenses for Penn (dec 2004)
    • GBT does a daisy scan from within IRC (15feb05)
    • YGOR Manager complete (early Aug 04-- put off to 2005 at the earliest)

8. PREVIOUS CYCLE requests(August 18 2003 - October 1 2003)

NOTE
we are nominally planning on a CDR on the cycle7/cycle8 boundary, although we will not officially set a date for the CDR until 15aug. Future decisions like this can be better synchronized with the planning process.

The Penn Array Receiver is a 64-pixel continuum imaging system for the 3mm band. The project is a collaboration of the University of Pennsylvania, NASA-Goddard Space Flight Center and the NRAO. The project is being funded through NRAO’s university-built instrumentation program. The project was formally initiated in the first quarter of 2002 with the signing of a memorandum of agreement between NRAO and Upenn. The NRAO is providing instrument machining services, control software and the interface to GBT systems, and data analysis software. The Penn Array Receiver will be designed as a facility instrument, accessible to all GBT Users. The Critical Design Review is expected to be held in Fall 2003, and scheduled delivery is in early 2005. More details on the PAR are available from Brian Mason’s
