GB 40-foot limitations:

  • large beam (1.2 deg in L-band?)
  • limited instrumentation?

GBT 100m limitations:

  • The telescope will be at AZ 184.5
  • We're almost sure that all elevation moves will only be done by the operator. I'm suggesting that you limit the number of elevation moves per day to something like 3.
  • A crane will be operating beneath the dish during the day. The height of the crane means that, during the day, the elevation of the telescope cannot be below 25 deg. We're still looking into whether the crane could interfere with over the top observing (to get to declinations > 39). We're sure observing the zenith will be possible.
  • Painting will be performed Mon-Thurs. The painting schedule will determine the elevation for each day. Most days, the telescope will need to be locked in elevation at access (elev = 77.8 deg). At night, the telescope can be moved to a different elevation. However, because we cannot remove the painting buckets each evening, the elevation ranges on Mon, Tues, and Wed nights will probably be limited to +/- 10 deg of access.
  • The buckets will be removed at the end of the day on Thurs, so you'll have free choice of elevation the nights of Thurs, Fri, Sat, and Sun through Mon morning when painting resumes. During the day on Fri, Sat, and Sun, you'll have to observe the 25 deg crane limit I mentioned above.

Arecibo 305m limitations:

  • May be immobilized and/or unavailable due to painting; schedule not yet clear. Current indications are that the painting may begin in early April and run for 12 weeks. The contractor has incentives to finish sooner than this, but there are no guarantees.
