Getting Started

Log into any RedHat 9 machine in Green Bank, for example, thales.

Normally, simply type:

At the unix command line to invoke gfm. If you explictly want to use the development version of gfm, type:

See Versions for more details. Once you have invoked gfm, the application will launch in 1-4 seconds. Upon startup, GFM will ask you whether you wish to work online or offline. Offline mode is used when you are not observing on the telescope and wish to use GFM to look at pre-existing data. After answering the initial dialog, you change your offline/online mode via the File drop-down menu (File->Work Online or File->Work Offline).

Working Offline

If you are working away from the telescope on pre-existing data, you should work in offline mode.

1. If you are in Online mode, go to File then Work Offline. You are now in offline mode.

2. Go to File and down to Open. A dialog window will appear, containing all of the roject directories in /home/gbtdata. Select the project of interest from the list. Once you have entered the directory for that project, double click on ScanLog.fits to access your data.

3. Depending upon how much data you have in your project, it may take up to several seconds to access all of your scans. The load process is complete when you see the list of your scans displayed sequentially on the left hand side of the gfm display.

4. Click on a scan in the scan list window to process it. The appropriate plugin will automatically be invoked to process the scan.

Working Online

1. If you are currently observing and you would like to take a quick look at your data as it appears, but are in offline mode. Go to the File menu and down to Work Online. This will pop up the following dialog box:

If you check Yes to I want to make updates to the telescope, the results from future peak and focus fits will be automatically applied to the antenna. Only select this option if you are the active observer. If you check No to this question, you can monitor new files automatically as they come in, without having any impact on ongoing observations.

2. If you wish to revert to offline mode again (e.g. to look at scans from a different project directory, simply go back to the File menu and select Work Offline.

Use of Plotting Capabilities

A User Manual is available that describes all the plotting functionality available in GFM. There is also a plotting Tutorial available that illustrates the plotting capabilities by example.
