Project Request

Summary

This project request comes late in the development of the GBT RFI Monitoring Station. The Station has been designed and built to the specifications attached below. The remaining work involves installing the system on the GBT and a functional checkout.

Scope

The scope of this project includes only the work required to install the system on the GBT and a functional checkout. It DOES NOT include any continuous maintenance or software enhancements. Software enhancements are at the very initial visualization stages; work associated with them will come as Modification Requests to this project.

Strategic Value to the Green Bank Site

The RFI monitoring station will:

• Make direction finding on GBT interference faster and more convenient by:
  • Providing a receive point for interference that is close to the GBT receivers. This makes it more likely that RFI seen on the GBT will also be seen by the monitoring equipment of our group, as the current monitoring station is lower in elevation and further away from the GBT Rx room.
  • Providing real-time access to the spectra from the monitoring station from the Jansky Laboratory. At present, I believe (check with Wes) that we can access the spectra via network links to the monitoring station at the 40ft. trailer, but it is not real-time monitoring.
• Provide a narrower-band higher-gain instrument for receiving aircraft radar to facilitate the blanking experiments Rick Fisher wants to do.
• Give the RFI group a second monitoring station (the deer stand is not functional at this writing) which will
  • Provide a backup when amplifiers suffer lightning damage
  • Allow one station (TBD which one) to dedicate much of its time to routine monitoring of the spectrum, helping us to build historical monitoring data.

Work Packages

1) Install the gimbal, the controller box, and the new fiber cable to the Rx room 2) Populate the gimbal with the antennas, amplifier box, and associated cabling 3) Perform a functional systems check

NOTE: Only work package #1 requires help outside the electronics division, so really that is the only part pertinent to project management, until we generate Modification Requests, which may involve the software group.

Time Frame

Of the two weeks suggested by Bob Anderson (May 7th and May 14th) for work package #1, only the week of May 7th will work for me. I have asked the two people (Dave Woody and Bob Simon) from the electronics division who will help me with installing the controller box, and running the new fiber cable to the Rx room if they had vacation plans for this week, and they responded that they did not.

Dependencies

Since all the hardware for this project has been built and tested, the only dependency for installation is the availability of the telescope mechanics, and perhaps the weather.
