pointing model explanations

Frank,

The MR http://wiki.gb.nrao.edu/bin/view/Software/ModificationRequest1C407 contains links to documents which describe Model4 and Model5.

It also contains a link to the man page for the pointingTestUtility, which implements Model5's pointing model.

One item not well described was a change in the definition of the pointing terms. In Model4 they taken as being in reference to refracted topocentric az/el; in Model5 they are taken as being in reference to mount az/el. (Note the subscript difference in section 6 between the documents. Model4 has terms like: ... + b11 cos(Az_{ref})sin(El_{ref}) Where the term in Model5 is: ... + b11 cos(Az_{mnt})sin(El_{mnt})

This has the effect of reversing the direction of the closed form traditional model computation. In Model4 the "towards mount" computation was closed form, and the indicated to topocentric was iterative. In Model5 the topocentric to mount is iterative, and the indicated to topocentric is closed form.

Also Model4 used a number of stages/steps in performing the computations. Model5 attempts to bind all stages together.

FYI: I installed the program 'pointingTestUtility' in /home/gbt/bin.
