GBT Operations & Commissioning Meeting

5 May 2006

AGENDA

Az Track, Antennae Report -- Bob

Observing News -- Ron

We had a very full week in supporting 23 projects in 32 sessions including 4 VLBI runs. Average setup times were 12 minutes. The telescope was scheduled for 16.5 hrs of maintenance, 2 hrs of receiver checkouts, 3.5 hrs of program checkout, and 1 hr of software tests. Lost time was a bit above average -- 7.6 hrs or 5% of the time scheduled for observing and tests. But, we also had 3 full, consecutive days without a single moment of lost time. The major sources of lost time were:

All but Astrid were single events. We'll be meeting this morning to discuss what to do about repairing Q-band.

Microwave Electronics Status -- Roger

Operations:

The Q-band spontaneously warmed up yesterday. Cause or prognosis not yet known.

Development:

A lot of microassembly work accomplished this week: Components for the Lab Spectrometer converters, Ka-band IF Amps, buffered 4-way splitter for Optical receiver, and IF amps for the ODMs were all worked on and completed or ~80% complete.

Stennes is developing a mathematical receiver model based on baseline stability requirements, and using that to develop component electrical requirements. Mike is applying that research to the C-band receiver redesign.

Assembly of Q-band test dewar progresses. We have been taking and analyzing baseline data with the Lab Spectrometer and test sources, to evaluate the data quality and stability.

Digital Electronics Status -- Rich

Digital Group Status 27-APR-06 THRU 04-MAY-06

***Operations, Problem summary***

Following last week's adjustment of the external +5 volt power supply, the CCB has continued to operate flawlessly. Immediately following last week's OPS meeting, corrections were made to the data logging scheme which had been put in place to ensure that we are now logging this +5 volt external power supply.

The IRIG system which synchronizes the site computers was found to be mis-configured this week. As a result, time in various computers was free-running from the internal crystals. This was noticed when two computers had drifted so far apart that they were unable to exchange information.

***Development***

Cal-Tech Continuum Backend (CCB):

This week, testing was resumed on all modules, PCBA's, etc. required for completion of the 2nd CCB. At this point, testing is about 60% complete with all tests going well. Even with the advent of Inventor training next week, we still expect to have the 2nd CCB completely assembled and ready for final tests by the week of 15-MAY-06.

Lab Spectrometer

The lab spectrometer is producing spectra in the 800 MHz mode. However, it is not without its problems. The samplers are still introducing artifacts into the data despite some efforts to remedy this. Preliminary evaluation of long term tests by Balser showed that the baselines are reasonably flat but that the noise does not integrate down with root-time. This may be due to sampler artifacts.

Miscellaneous

ALMA Jason, JD and Rich continue to spend time on this project.

***Plans***

- Continue CCB construction...
- Continue Lab Spectrometer commissioning
- Continue ALMA support as needed...

Randy and Rich

Software Status -- Amy

This ends Week 5 of 6 in the third development cycle of 2006 which can be viewed at PlanOfRecordC32006. Integration testing begins next week and regression testing is scheduled for May 15. We are scheduled to release M&C software changes on May 17; release notes are under development. We are also planning on releasing GBTIDL v2.0 on May 17, 2006. GBTIDL v2.0 release notes will be emailed to gbtlocal prior to the release.

Operational support for this week included:

Summary of Cycle 3 MRs:

Pulsar Related -- Scott

MIT/LL 43m Project -- Glen

Successful automated Spacecraft tracking Tuesday, Thursday and Friday of this week. Ran special test tracks for Phil Erickson of Haystack Observatory on Wednesday. His experiments were also successful.

We will track from 12:00 to 22:00 UTC Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday and Friday next week.
