GBT Telescope Operations -- Bob
Quiet week. Only significant operation was removal of the 20m's receiver.
* See http://wiki.gb.nrao.edu/bin/view/Mechanical/WebHome for shop work schedule - updated 11/15
- Ku band cooling and will be installed next week
- C band will be removed next week.
- Mustang will arrive next week.
- The new wind direction sensor has been installed at Weather 2 and is now in service.
- Installation of new accelerometer set began Monday - expect to complete installation today (30-NOV-07).
- Tipper has been removed and placed in basement pending a decision on its final destiny.
RFI Group Operations -- Carla
- Operational Support:
- BOS User Support
- Corrected error in format of default pointing catalog
- Resurrected Archivist.
- C8 Plan of Record - PlanOfRecordC82007
- MIT/LL Feed work will be delayed until early January 2008, normal ops until then.
- The MIT/LL group is looking into a replacement disk drive system, that should be more reliable.
- Worked with Eric Phelps on 43m real-time pointing tests on Monday.
- Found a 0.07 second offset in commanded vs actual pointing. Fixed this by extrapolating 0.07 seconds into the future for commands.
- Mostly normal spacecraft tracking. 43m ops was good, but there were some computer problems in the trailer on Tuesday.
- Accomplishments:
- Working on scratch pad for on the scheduling web page and time accounting.
- Working on brochure to hand out at AAS meeting, as well as at upcoming talks
- Testing scheduling web page, version 0
* Upcoming events (next 2 weeks)
- Eric Sessoms will be here next week for work on including windowed and fixed sessions. Begin testing new interface
- GB DSS update Dec 13 9-noon
- CV DSS talk possible moved to Dec 14
MUSTANG -- Brian
PROGRESS:
- Receiver is cold at UPenn with the new 20 GHz BP filter. Test data so far look good though it needs further analysis.
- progress on YGOR manager continues
- BSM has made a number of improvements to the IDL commissioning analysis pipeline (refactor code; implement new scan strategy simulations)
- 2nd PTC arrived in GB. Will be used to cold-trap C-band/mustang lines on GBT next week with UPenn's test dewar
UPCOMING:
- Simon Dicker, and the receiver, arrive on Monday for tests that week, and
- installation the week of the 10th,
- observing Fri night Dec 14th.
- There are still a few things we need to get done from the shop (new helium feedthrough pipes that better allow for the 300 K mitigation) before the 10th
- upgrade spider (on gbt DAQ computer) to RH2.6
- new PM (Marty Bloss) monday
PTCS program -- John
- Servo improvements
- Data collected for acceleration feedforward development
- Test time tonight to be used for more feedforward and compensator tests
- Pointing
- Kim's 3 Matlab scripts for generating a pointing model have been tested independently at GB. An end-to-end test may be possible soon.
- Newsletter article written on PFM5
- A few hours of Ka/CCB offset pointing and half power tracks were obtained Wed night
- Organization, processing and documentation of past gain curves has begun
- Holography
- Matlab scripts have been written to read in the 2004 traditional holography data from the original FITS files. Two dimensional images of correlator outputs (RR, TT, RT and arctan(RT/RQ)) are being produced and examined.
- Elevation scans at Ka of the lunar limb tangent point were obtained to further test the surface model
- Instrumentation
- Wind direction sensor 2 has been replaced successfully
- New accelerometers installed
- Tipper removed from service
CICADA program -- John
- GUPPi
- Scott, Ron, and Paul are working on the data acquisition and control software
- John is working on the hardware interface software
- Randy and Jason are prototyping the tricky bits of the application gateware.
- John installed and cabled up the 10 GbE? cards into the GPU cluster for Scott and Paul to experiment with.
- WVU is working on the data output packing module for the device.
- Other CICADA work
- Attended AstroGPU? conference in Princeton. Conference was an in-depth program on using GPU's for acceleration of scientific computing.
- Attended IEEE/ACM Supercomputing '07 conference in Reno, NV. Got many good ideas to go along with our FPGA's, namely:
- Storage and Compute clusters
- data interconnect fabrics
- FPGA accelerators
- GPU programming tools
- parallel programming systems
30 Nov 2007
- Accomplishments since last report:
- Zpectrometer Tone Calibrations performed.
- Upcoming activities:
- Zpectrometer Tone Calibration and absorptive load testing Friday PM.
- Removal of Zpectrometer from GBT next week.
- Risks
- Comments:
- Load testing to determine telescope optics contributions to offsets and gain variations.
- Workshop successfull in clearifing outstanding science issues and how they relate to technical specifications.
- Pipline workshop gave a good account of existing piplines and how we may want to proceed for this project.
- The 45 degree twist mandrels are complete and will be sent with phase shifters for electroforming.
