Problems and GBT Data Quality

This section describes system (hardware or software) problems which may have had an adverse impact on the quality of GBT data collected for more than one or two observing projects. Problems are listed (when known) chronologically in reverse time order.

Problem: LO1 may have been running intermittantly from a less stable timing reference rather than the Maser
When: Oct 4, 2004 through Nov 2, 2004
Data Impact:

This was an itermittant problem which may have significantly affected pulsar timing experiments or very narrow spectral line measurements. The effective uncertainty introduced when the LO1 was not using the Maser timing reference (but instead using a local reference) was up to about 1.5KHz in frequency.

Pulsar timing experiments which observed a standard pulsar calibrator can easily determine if this was a problem for their experiment by reducing the standard calibrator data. The impact on most spectroscopic experiements would only have been signficant for those requiring frequency resolutions of a few KHz or better.
