NRAO Student Observing Support Program

NRAO maintains a program to support research by students, both graduate and undergraduate, at U.S. universities and colleges. This program is intended to strengthen the proactive role of the Observatory in training new generations of telescope users. At the current time, regular proposals submitted for the Green Bank Telescope (GBT), the Very Long Baseline Array (VLBA) and the High Sensitivity Array (HSA) are eligible for funding, while regular VLA proposals are not. Large proposals for the VLBA, GBT, HSA, VLA and any combination of these telescopes are also eligible. A brief summary of the steps in the application process follows.

  • New applications to the program may be submitted along with new observing proposals at any proposal deadline.
  • Applications begin by you (the requesting investigator) reading the Terms and Conditions, and then filling out the Preliminary Funding Proposal Form. For GBT and VLA proposals this is available as the proposal student support page of the NRAO Proposal Submission Tool. For VLBA and HSA proposals an ascii form must be completed and sent in with the proposal.
  • Include the completed proposal student support page along with the proposal at the time of proposal submission.
  • Shortly after submission of the proposal you will receive notification of its receipt. If you do not receive an acknowledgement within five working days following the proposal deadline, please contact Carl Bignell for GBT proposals and Joan Wrobel for VLA, HSA and VLBA proposals.
  • Soon after the announcement of the disposition of your observing proposal, you will receive notification about the disposition of the application for student support. This latter notification will come from the NRAO Student Observing Support Coordinator. Contact Dale Frail for details.
  • If your application is approved, you will be asked to read the General Provisions, and then fill in the Final Funding Proposal, Budget Form and the Final Funding Proposal, Budget Narrative Form. Funding is contingent upon the general terms and conditions outlined in the General Provisions. Awards will be announced in the NRAO Newsletter and added to a Cumulative Record of Awards.
  • Final Funding Proposals will be reviewed by the Student Observing Support Coordinator and then forwarded to Anthony Turner, the NRAO Student Observing Support Administrator.
