The program was announced in 2002 May, applicable to new observing proposals submitted for trimester 2002-C and, retroactively, to successful observing proposals submitted for earlier trimesters. A total of 12 successful observing proposals requested student support. All 12 requests were approved by the GBT Student Support Committee. One of the 12 students later declined the award due to other commitments.
