TELESCOPE OPERATIONS


ACCESS DURING OBSERVING

General

Use the following procedure when personnel require access to the NON-TIPPING portion of the telescope while observing is in progress. Contact the GBT Supervisor or division head as necessary.

Access During Observing Operations

STEP ACTION
1 Determine if weather conditions and observing routine will permit safe telescope access. Continue if access permitted.
2 Determine what work will be completed and update Opslog.
3 Advise personnel of any safety concerns and provide the gate key.
NOTE The antenna must be stopped to place tools or equipment on the entry steps when boarding. The mechanics or technicians will contact us to determine when observing routines will permit stopping the antenna.
4 Monitor work via communication systems.
5 Monitor weather conditions. Take appropriate actions as necessary.
6 Upon return of personnel, obtain gate key and briefing on telescope status.
7 Update Opslog.
8 Continue normal operations.
