TELESCOPE OPERATIONS

ASTRID

General

The goal of ASTRID (formerly Turtle/Observing API ) is to build on the lessons learned from GO to produce the next generation observing utility. ASTRID is used to build observing scripts which are the key component of a scheduling block. ASTRID is then used to edit, monitor, and run those scheduling blocks. ASTRID includes a tab for displaying data similar to GFM (GBT FITS Monitor).

A goal of ASTRID is to help focus the observer's attention on the science being done on the GBT rather than the actual procedural elements required to collect their data.

Info

ASTRID may be run from any workstation (unix, linux, Windows PC). The Windows PC will require Exceed running.

ASTRID requires unique gateway permissions to run. If using ASTRID, include monctrl@wind in the gateway for all devices and the antenna.

The processes used to run ASTRID are still referred to as Turtle.

Astrid failures may require contacting support personnel prior to taking any corrective actions. Check the latest GBTFLAG messages for current requirements.

Astrid related wiki pages for use in understanding ASTRID and/or troubleshooting problems:

The character ^ is used below to emphasize spaces between dialog elements.

Starting/Closing ASTRID

STEP ACTION
1 From an xterm window, enter: astrid (launches the ASTRID GUI).
2 In the Observation Management tab, place a check in comment and trace boxes of the observation log options.
3 To close ASTRID, exit from the File menu or press X in upper right corner of the window.

Astrid Failure Logs

STEP ACTION
1 Should an Astrid failure occur, try to save the current observing dialog log before restarting turtle processes.
2 Save the log noting the directory location and pass this info on to software division personnel.
3 Restart Astrid as noted below.

Re-Starting Turtle Processes

STEP ACTION
1 From an xterm window, enter: ssh ^ -l ^ monctrl ^ wind (follow with password).
2 At the monctrl prompt, enter: RestartTurtle (the Turtle processes turtle.d, ns, and es will be stopped and restarted in the required order with the proper time delays).
3 Verify the health of Turtle via TaskMaster and the Cleo message window and advise the observer as necessary.
NOTE Additional troubleshooting guidance is available at the Turtle Troubleshooting wiki web page.
4 Log the failure in OpsLog and contact the designated callout person as required.
