GBT FITS MONITOR

General

The GBT FITS Monitor (GFM) was initially developed in response to the needs of the precision telescope control system (PTCS) project for analyzing continuum data. It has since been incorporated as a tab within Astrid. This application provides scan-based display and analysis of GBT data, either in real-time as the data is being collected, or in an offline mode where it can be used to step through the scans from an observation.

Since GFM is incorporated into Astrid, there's no need to launch it as a separate application in conjunction with that program. It's included here, as a tool that may be used when you have no need for viewing the whole Astrid suite.

Because the GFM can work in two On Line and one Off Line mode, it defaults to Off Line. An option under the "File" menu allows for selection of Off Line (check mark next to the words), On Line (no check mark next to Off Line), and On Line with the ability to send real time updates of focus and pointing corrections to the antenna. A pop up dialog window allows for selecting this last option. Only the active observer should use this program On Line and send data to the telescope.

The GFM works in connection with Dynamic Corrections software. If the GFM is used to determine pointing corrections, Dynamic Corrections MUST be enabled.

Starting the GFM

STEP ACTION
1 From any unix/linux workstation, enter: gfm (the application will launch within a few seconds.
2 Select to work either "online" or "offline" via the option under the File menu. Only the active observer should select the online mode enabled to send pointing/focus information to the telescope.
3 To quit the applicatiom, simply do a CTRL-C in the xterm window used to launch it or select exit from the File menu.
