TELESCOPE OPERATIONS

OUTAGES

Warning

Ensure personnel safety through effective communications and the two man rule. Notify people of telescope movements, before they're made! Fall protection is required at several PMU/PCT connection locations. Laser safety glasses must be used while laser system is on. When access is permitted during observing operations, individuals are allowed to step on to the telescope ONLY when signaled to by the operator.

Info

To coordinate maintenance activities as well as monitor other site resources (outside of normal business hours) the duty operator shall remain in or near the operations center at all times. This becomes increasingly important when personnel are responding to an outage on the GBT.

If calling the FAA to advise of inoperative GBT aircraft warning lights, include the following:  Latitude=38Deg 25Min 59.42Sec;  Longitude=079Deg 50Min 23.20Sec;  AGL=495ft; MSL=3141ft.

Outage Procedure

STEP ACTION
1 Attempt to troubleshoot and isolate problem to a specific device or program unless advised of special actions otherwise (see GBTFlag messages). Correct if possible.
2 If assistance is required, contact the responsible personnel (see callout lists).
3 Update OpsLog.
4 Update the White Board if the outage will extend beyond your shift.
5 Assist callout persons where possible (within the scope of your duties).
6 Refer to Outages Requiring GBT Access (below) if the outage requires telescope access.

Outages Requiring GBT Access

Use the following procedures if an outage or problem requires personnel to access the GBT during periods of operation. Advise the GBT supervisor if problems prevent access, repairs, or a return to operations.

STEP ACTION
1 Determine if weather conditions will permit telescope access. Continue to step 2 if permitted or wait for improvement.
2 If access is required to the tipping structure, move the telescope to Access position (EL: 77.850 deg.) and insert stow pin. Disable AZ/EL drives and lockout.
3 Restrict antenna control via the Cleo Gateway.
4 Have individuals responding get a radio and gate key. Ensure two-man rule.
5 Monitor work via communication systems and assist as necessary. Ensure individuals remove their servo system locks before leaving the site (unless conditions require otherwise).
6 Upon return of personnel: Obtain gate key and briefing on telescope status.
7 Update OpsLog.
8 Prepare for and resume normal operations as soon as possible.
