TELESCOPE OPERATIONS


PORTABLE SPECTRUM ANALYZER

General

A portable spectrum analyzer can be handy in monitoring RFI or verifying the signal from a known source during some observing experiments. This procedure is intended as a guide to assist in the basic setup and use of the spectrum analyzer.

Connecting the Spectrum Analyzer to the Converter Rack

STEP ACTION
1 Determine which converter rack channel(s) will be monitored.
2 At the converter rack, open the rear door to Rack A. To the left side will be this panel.

STEP ACTION
3 Connect the black cable from port 573 to the converter rack channel (J8 connector) you want to monitor (CM1 through CM4). Connect the black cable from port 574 to any additional channel you want to monitor (CM5 through CM8). The converter rack J8 connection ports are to the right side of the rack, labeled J8, with CM 1-4 located at the top with CM 5-8 located at the bottom. The connection ports look like this.

STEP ACTION
4 Close the converter rack rear door when finished.
5 At the spectrum analyzer, plug one end of an RF cable into the port (573 or 574) corresponding to the coverter rack channel you want to monitor. The panel looks like this.

6 Plug the other end of the RF cable into the front of the spectrum analyzer.

7 The spectrum analyzer is now connected to a signal. Move on to Using the Spectrum Analyzer.

Using the Spectrum Analyzer

STEP ACTION
1 Turn on the sprectrum analyzer by pressing Line.
2 Press the Frequency button.
3 Press the button corresponding to Center Frequency from the CRT menu. Enter the center frequency of the band to monitor using the numeric keypad on the Data Panel. Press the MHz button on this panel.
5 Press the SPAN button. Using the numeric keypad on the Data Panel, enter a value to cover the width of the band pass you want to monitor. Follow by pressing the MHz button.
NOTE 1 To smooth out noise, press the BW button on the Control menu and select video BW man from the CRT menu. Use the PRES button (Up-Down arrows) for adjustment.
NOTE 2 To use the Max Hold feature, press the Trace button on the Control menu and select Max Hold A from the CRT menu. To return to normal mode, press Clear Write A button from the CRT menu.
