PULSAR OBSERVING WITH THE BCPM

General

The following are basic procedures used in relation to pulsar observations using the BCPM.

Info

Additional specific settings will be required depending on the observers desires. The following guide shows the basic tasks that may be required.

Starting Applications

BCPM Screens

STEP ACTION
1 From an xterm window: ssh ^ sadira Logs in secure to this workstation. You can login to a different workstation if directed.
2 From the same window: ssh ^ -l ^ bcpm2 ^ bcpm2 Logs in to BCPM and brings up task selection menu. From the menu, select the u option (user interface). When prompted for a login name, press enter (default option). The following windows will launch: Status Display, Command Line Interface, Graphical User Interface, Level Monitor

BCPM Command Line Interface Window Commands

COMMAND ACTION
setpower Runs a script on the BCPM to set the power levels in the channels.
timing Used to set up the BCPM in timing mode and start acquiring data.
monitor Sets up the BCPM (for search and voltage sampling modes) and acquires data without saving it to disk or tape.
takedata Used in search and voltage sampling modes to commence taking a stretch of search data to disk or tape.
abort Stops the BCPM without saving the last data sample to disk or tape.
stop Stops the BCPM and saves the last data sample to disk or tape.

BCPM GO Panel and Setup Scripts

STEP ACTION
NOTE The config tool has replaced this configuration application and the older setup scripts, though they may be desired by some observers. Do not run unless requested.
1 To start the BCPM GO Panel, from an xterm window enter: PSRGUI (launches the application)
2 To run a setup script, from an xterm window enter: cd ^ include (changes to the include directory); then enter: glish ^ -l ^ xxxx.g (substitute the "xxxx" with the applicable script name); Select the option number corresponding to the desired receiver; Select the BCPM (option 1); Enter r (run option). The BCPM should now be ready.
