TELESCOPE OPERATIONS


SHIFT DUTIES GUIDE

General

Additional tasks may be required depending on the status of equipment, facilities, observing requirements or schedules.

Console Shifts

SHIFT ACTION
D/N Get briefed by outgoing operator. Log in and update Ops Log program. Ensure consistency between log/observing schedules. Proofread logs to ensure correctness.
D/N Check GBT aircraft warning lights. Notify FAA if problem.
D/N Review previous shift logs.
D/N Review white board/GBT FLAG messages and any email/changes to procedures.
D/N Check resource calendar and observing schedules for upcoming activities.
D/N Check/compare site time with master clock(s).
D/N Check sampler2log for weather FITS files (periodically throughout shift).
D/N Monitor winds/weather and take actions per guidelines. Log conditions in Ops log periodically. Check forecasts/radar. Use lightning detection systems as necessary. Use Cleo weather to monitor peak gusts and reset as needed.
D Check for/collect any materials to take to warehouse/servo room (maintenance days only).
D/N Monitor sounds from listening post stations.
D/N Check devices currently in use for observing (and periodically throughout shift). Ensure correct instrument parameters (i.e., LPC's, antenna settings, receiver in use, backends, active surface, etc.).
D/N Check HVACs and GBT Cryogenics periodically. Monitor equipment room temps.
D/N Check feed heater/blower status and turn on/off per guidelines.
D/N Check 43meter and 45ft antenna status.
D/N Check rain gauge, measure and log precip amount on weekends and holidays.
D/N Assist observers with setup and running of observations as necessary. Mount VLBI disk packs when required and monitor during observing.
D/N Manage Gateway access.
D/N Manage software and equipment failures. Log and report failures, contact assistance, and send email notifications as required.
D/N Clean control rooms areas as required. Check water cooler and refill as needed.
D/N Print Ops log at shift end. Ensure correctness. Double check lost time figures, spelling, grammar, etc.

Warehouse/Maintenance Day Shift

ITEM ACTION
1 Log in and update Ops Log program as necessary.
2 Check GBT aircraft warning lights. Notify FAA if problem.
3 Check resource calendar for planned maintenance activities.
4 Advise staff of GBT status changes as necessary.
5 Stow antenna and position subsystems for maintenance activities as required.
6 Enter "JMAINT" as the scan coordinator project name.
7 Monitor 43meter and 45ft antenna and observing programs.
8 Monitor winds/weather and take actions per guidelines. Log conditions in Ops log periodically. Check forecasts/radar. Use lightning detection systems as necessary. Use Cleo weather to monitor peak gusts and reset as needed.
9 Manage Gateway access.
10 Control GBT, 43meter, and 45ft access (see access policy letter).
11 Monitor radio communications.
12 Report software and equipment failures through Ops Log.

Day Staff Shift

ITEM ACTION
1 Complete weather logging duties.
2 Check resource calendar for planned activities.
3 VLBI Disk Packs: (A) Inventory and request disk packs to ensure availability for scheduled runs. (B) Ship/receive tapes and update web based tracking programs.
4 DLT Tapes: (A) Install/remove tapes in drives as requested. (B) Archive tapes and update logs as required. (C) Prepare and ship tapes as requested.
5 MIT Disk Packs: Remove/Install and ship disk packs as required. Transport incoming disk packs to the MIT trailer. Send out daily email message concerning disk packs (see Disk Pack Handling Procedures)
6 Review/update procedures.
7 Review GBT FLAG messages and daily email traffic.
8 Assist at GBT and other telescopes as directed.
9 Complete other duties as assigned.
