TELESCOPE OPERATIONS


UNIX - LINUX WORKSTATION INFORMATION

Warning

The information contained here is for operational use only. Passwords, especially root (super user 'su') passwords, should not be disclosed to unauthorized persons. Notify the computer division if you believe a password has been compromised.

General

The tables below contain information concerning computers used to support telescope operations. Some listed under GBT Operations are necessary to support other Green Bank operations as well. No single board computers are listed. Contact the GBT supervisor or computer division for additional information.

Rebooting Unix - Linux Workstations

Linux

STEP ACTION
1 Quit/close any applications currently running.
2 Quit the Linux session you are running (returns to GNOME Login window)
3 At GNOME Login window, select reboot from the session menu.
4 Check/restart any processes (previously running in the background) that may have been interrupted.

Unix

STEP ACTION
1 Quit/close any applications currently running.
2 Login as root: su ^ root (# prompt will appear)
3 Verify if anyone is logged in remotely by using finger, who, or rusers commands.
4 Enter: /etc/reboot (initiates booting)
5 Check/restart any processes (previously running in the background) that may have been interrupted.
