Offset Pointing Analysis

October 11, 2007

Here we report investigations of how the pointing errors change with separation, both in time and angle on the sky. For any pointing run we may take all possible pairings of the peak data and calculate the difference in LPCs for the pair and the angular and temporal separation between the two peak measurements.

Methods

The pointing calibration runs were processed with "prepoint" with "-lpc" option to produce ascii datafiles that summarize the LPCs for each peak scan. IDL Software was written to further process these data files and produce from them two additional files:

These files are stored in the directory: /home/groups/ptcs/data/offsetdata/ and the software is in ~fghigo/GBT/ptcs/src/astplot.pro

The format of an "avgs" file is as follows:

And the format of a "pairs" file :

Summary of processing

Data files have been produced for the following all-sky pointing runs. This tabulates the projects, means and standard deviations of the LPCs and differences of LPCs. (All the related files are in /home/groups/ptcs/data/offsetdata/ )

Plots of the LPC differences versus time separation and angular separation are attached below.

Todd has processed these files with a C program that can select rows on the basis of data ranges in multiple columns and compute the rms of the resulting sample. Here are some quick results (subject to revision). For two sources observed within 60 minutes of each other, and separated by <10 deg in the axis in question, the rms of the LPC values are:

We would have to go back further in time to get daytime data for model 4c. In this processing scheme, the new model does appear to perform better than the old model did (just before the track refurb). However the values I get for the old model are not as good as what you had quoted below. Can you tell me more about the values you quoted: 2.8" and 3.2"? For example, were they computed for smaller intervals of time or for sources closer together than 10deg? Or perhaps they were measured before the track had degraded so far. one column that we should add to the output of your extraction tool is the windspeed (if it is easily available).
