TPTCSHOL_01 June 12, 2008 -- Survey some broadcast satellites.

Goal

The goal was to observe some geostationary satellites at KU band to find some with strong and fairly stable CW tones that could be used as a reference signal for traditional holography.

Scheduling blocks

I have made a scheduling block for some of the geostationary satellites in /home/groups/ptcs/obs/turtle/
KUsats.sb uses a catalog that refers to a file of 2-line elements called geo_satellites.txt in the same directory.

Note that Galaxy-4R has a huge diurnal motion of 4 degrees in elevation, and thus not a good target.

Scans 25-38: test tone injected from LO1B; Steve determined that a test tone level of -6 dBm approximated the level seen for the 11.701 GHz signal from Solidaridad 2. Although we only recorded scans with the ACS in 12.5 or 50 MHz bandwidth mode, Steve looked over a much wider range with the spectrum analyzer. The tone power level is the synthesizer setting. There is an unknown amount of attenuation between the synthesizer and where it is injected before the first amplifier. Probably of the order of 20dB.

- Galaxy 28 = 67.82 arcsec
- Galaxy 4R = 61.78 arcsec

All of these plot the y-axis in relative DB. The red is LCP and the green is RCP.

SOLIDARIDAD II, 50 MHZ band, not sure of offset: 1 to 1.5 beams in elevation.
Scan 5: Sol2, with offset, DB scale:

SOLIDARIDAD II, 12.5 MHz band. no offset. Big spike at 11.701 is out of band.

SOLIDARIDAD II, scan 14, zoom in on the spike at 11.701 GHz; no hanning. Peak appears to be less than two channels in width; the channel width is 3.1 khz.

SOLIDARIDAD II, offset is one HPBW in azimuth. Height of peak varies quite a bit from one scan to the next.

Subject: Stability of satellite line

Todd,

A brief check of amplitude and frequency of the
strong line from Sol II, which was observed
more than any other, and we have measurements
over two hours, show the frequency varied by no
more than 30 Hz or so.  Since the channel
spacing was 3kHz, this 30 Hz is in the noise.
The amplitude varied by maybe 2 db.
