Cost of Software Quality (CoSQ) Metrics, C1 2006

Overview

10 SDD members worked 2333 hours in C1 2006 over 7 weeks (83% technical work, 17% overhead incl. vacation/sick/holiday time). Failure rates dropped remarkably mid-cycle, particularly external failures (those experienced during the course of running an accepted proposal), as a result of two changes: 1) the patch to Turtle to fix missing some state transitions (noted by Tim Robishaw)/patch to Grail for callbacks, and 2) switching back to UDP (a change made by Computing) which solved mysterious 15-second delays in the control system.

Work by Product Category

"Process and Infrastructure" refers to all the work that is done a) as an integral part of the development cycle, such as integration or regression tests, or b) any changes for which benefits are not readily visible to astronomers, such as platform/OS changes and third party software upgrades. This cycle, a significant amount of work was dedicated to the physical infrastructure upgrades (gcc update, vortex replacement, moving remainder of systems to linux).
